Frequently Asked Questions About Universiti Malaya Residential Colleges
General Questions
Q: How many Kolej Kediaman does Universiti Malaya have?
A: UM has 13 on-campus residential colleges (KK1 to KK13), an International House, and off-campus apartments including Apartment Jepun. Together they accommodate over 12,000 students.
Q: Are meals included in the room rate?
A: No. Meals are not included. Students use the college cafeteria or nearby food courts on a pay-per-use basis.
Q: Can I choose which Kolej Kediaman I want to stay in?
A: New undergraduates are assigned a college based on their course/faculty. Senior students may submit a preference during the online application period, subject to availability.
Q: How long is the accommodation valid?
A: Accommodation is offered for one academic session (two semesters). You must reapply each new academic session.
Application Questions
Q: How do I apply for accommodation at Kolej Kediaman UM?
A: New undergraduates are automatically placed. Senior students apply via the UM student portal. Postgraduate and international students should email hep@um.edu.my.
Q: Is accommodation guaranteed for all UM students?
A: Accommodation is not guaranteed for all students. Priority is given to new undergraduates. Senior students, postgraduate, and international students are accommodated subject to availability.
Q: What happens if I want to move out before the end of semester?
A: Students who wish to move out early must inform their college office. They must also return their room key with a completed Borang Akuan Penyerahan Kunci.
Q: Where can I find the official room rates?
A: The latest room rates are published by HEP UM at hep.um.edu.my/accommodation or available as a PDF from the Student Affairs Division.
Facilities & Rules
Q: Is Wi-Fi included in the college rooms?
A: Yes. All 13 Kolej Kediaman at UM are equipped with Wi-Fi internet access for residents.
Q: Can I have visitors in my room?
A: Visitors are allowed during designated visiting hours and must sign in at the security post. Overnight guests are generally not permitted. Refer to the Buku Panduan Kolej Kediaman UM for full visitor policies.
Q: What is a College Felo?
A: A Felo is an academic staff member assigned to each residential college to provide mentoring, counselling, and administrative support to students.

Q: Is Kolej Kediaman UM accessible for students with disabilities?
A: Yes. UM applies universal design principles (MS1184) across the campus, including ramps, tactile paving, accessible restrooms, elevators, priority parking, and wheelchair-friendly pathways in all facilities.
Q: Which college is best for FCSIT students?
A: FCSIT students are typically placed in Zone 3 colleges: KK5 (Dayasari), KK8, or KK10 (KKTAZ). These are closest to the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology.
